Understanding: Battle
**CURRENTLY UNDER REVISION**
The only person you will ever battle is yourself.
I don't mean that the way people treat you is your fault or that you should blame others for the challenges you face in life. Yes, you may have enemies in life, people may treat you poorly, you maybe have treated others poorly, but all of your actions in situations only reflect back on You. It's important to take responsibility for your actions, because once you take responsibility you take back your Power to Choose. The Power to Choose to take a few breaths and center yourself before responding to someone that has said or done something hurtful -OR- to react and hurt them back in some way. The Power to Choose to put hate into the world because hate has come to you -OR- to give love to the world because that's what you want for the world. The Power to Choose to take out your emotions on others and blame them for those emotions -OR- not let others get to you or when they do get to you investigate within yourself WHY. Why can be an important question to ask yourself when it comes to your emotions. I personally have had countless experiences in which I was triggered by someone who had nothing but caring and love for me. By triggered I mean emotions and feelings from a past trauma being relived inside my mind and body to be a current day experience. Triggers can be tricky, because they feel so real and so very present. A trigger can be as simple as someone unwrapping some gum to chew and all of a sudden you are whipped into an emotional frenzy, taking the action of the person extremely personal as if they decided to chew the gum just to offend you, make you sad or push your buttons. Of course, with certain people, that may in fact be the case, but its up to us to decide what is real and what it not. How can you decide what is real if you're at the whim of your emotions and traumas? Its nearly impossible, I know because I've lived it. I have been in situations where my partner, the person I most trust and care for in the world, has said something to me that I felt completely shattered by. Yet, in context there's absolutely no ill intent, no evil, no betrayal and certainly no hatred behind whatever he said, but my emotions have told me otherwise. My emotions, thoughts and feelings told me "He's exactly like the abusers you grew up with". Looking at the truth of the person I know and love, all the good and bad of him, there's no way in my logical mind that that thought would ever be true. But in reliving my emotions, thoughts and feelings I created in the time of traumas I have experienced throughout my life, it was absolutely real and true. In fact, I've encountered the same patterns of situations that are reminiscent of those times. And what I can now say is that those experiences where showing me something in me needed to change and evolve, though while living those experiences I very much felt like the people I subjected myself to needed to change and evolve. Which actually may be true, but can I control other people, do I have that power? Absolutely not. But what I can control is myself; the thoughts I choose to believe and the way I react to my emotions.
The term "mirror" is used often in the spiritual community, but I feel like its meaning gets lost and somehow causes people to believe that if they change their behavior that the people and world around them will reflect that. Which is true, to an extent... I personally believe that the people, situations and experiences you have are not always showing you something "right" or "wrong" with yourself and that you should eternally strive to be good so people around you will be good too. What I believe is that we will have challenges in our lives regardless of how nice or loving we are and its how we deal with those challenges that is the mirror of who we are. The challenges show us who we are, what may need a little work and in what direction we are headed. I have gotten lost in the term mirror before, thinking that because I was living a life following what the being we call God was telling me to do that everyone around me would reflect what I was experiencing. But that was not the case. I had blissful, peaceful, connected, cared for experiences alone, but once I got around people the challenges arose. Challenges I though I wouldn't have to face given the blissful state I was in, I thought my bliss would be reflected back to me through everyone around me. But, everyone is not on the same path, not everyone understands your point of view or who you are or what is in your head. That's why when we find people that seem to be like us we are elated and don't feel so alone in the world. To me, no one will ever know the whole truth that is ME, but I'm not sad or upset about that truth. Actually it reminds me that my experience, like yours, is sacred. Not all of me is meant to be understood and shared, some of me is meant for me and me alone. And that which is not meant to be shared is my personal power and freedom. I have given away my power many times throughout my life. Given to make others happy, to "help", to be accepted, loved and out of ignorance. And there's the beauty. I willingly gave it away, yes out of ignorance, but nonetheless I am in control of me; my energy, my power, my choices, my thoughts, my emotions, what I choose to learn or not learn. So that's why I can say "The Only One you Will Ever Battle is Yourself". People may be able to intimidate, hurt, shame, guilt, manipulate or trick you. People are capable of both good and bad, but the good news is taking responsibility for yourself can help you to start reclaiming your power and handling your thoughts and emotions in ways that are healthy and will benefit you and effortlessly reflect out to everyone around you. And once you know how to deal with yourself dealing with the challenges from other people will be more manageable. Lead by example. If you want kindness from people show them kindness, if you want love from people show them love, etc.
Mirrors aren't always challenging either, sometimes they show you the utter beauty within you. Whatever it is when your look out your little windows called eyes is a reflection of you. If you look at someone and determine "they are ugly" ask yourself what part of you feels ugly. If you look at a situation and find that its a repeat of a situation you've experienced in your past ask yourself what you need to learn from it this time around. For me, the patterns I endured were all teaching me about my personal power and freedom I had not been claiming. I allowed people to treat me poorly and I kept myself in undesirable situations out of fear, feeling like I HAD to experience it, that I was destined or bound to negative situations. But, that was not the truth. The truth is I was being shown what happens when I choose to give my power away, to keep myself stuck and allow others to determine my level of freedom and happiness.
